Why are you called Broadway?
Our original facility was in a church
on Broadway in downtown Oakland where the YMCA now stands. We moved
into our current location in Adams Point in 1984.
Is Broadway affiliated with a church or other
organization?
No. Broadway Children's School is an
independent nonprofit and not affiliated with any other organization.
What is Broadway's policy on diversity?
Our school is committed to reflecting the diversity of the Oakland
community through our programs, staff, and enrollment. We welcome
children from all denominations, creeds, and races. To help us with
this commitment, we have a parent-lead Diversity Committee that
works with the staff to bring diverse applicants to the school and
to encourage all Broadway families to share their cultures and interests
in the classroom.
We use the Anti-Bias Curriculum of the National Association of Education
of Young Children (NAEYC) as our guide.
How competitive is admissions into the school?
Typically we receive far more applications
than we have available spots. Admission preferences are given to
children whose families have a previous affiliation with the school.
Additional spaces are filled on the basis of a lottery, giving preference
to neighborhood children and diversity presently underrepresented
in the school population.
Where do most of the Broadway families
live?
Most of our families live in or around
Oakland, Piedmont and Berkeley.
What level of parental involvement is
expected?
We encourage parent participation but
it is not required. Part of what makes our school special is the
level of parental involvement at the school. We don't have any specific
criteria for all parents to follow, and we know that some parents
may not have as much time to give as others. The more involved you
are at the school, the more you'll feel a part of the community.
Do you offer any additional parent education
classes?
We typically offer several parent education
nights per year. In these classes, we discuss important issues relating
to children's development including behavior/discipline, nutrition,
pre-reading info, and others. Sometimes we bring in an expert in
the field to the class.
Is financial aid available?
Financial aid is available for those
who need assistance in paying for tuition. There is a limited amount
that is offered to those that qualify.
Does the school accomodate children with allergies
and asthma?
Yes, the school does work with children
and families dealing with these issues, and we do everything we
can to accommodate their needs.
